New Horizons

Written by

Just thought I would make an update here.  The second book is coming along well.  Hopefully, it will get done this year.

On another note, my computer and my wife's  computer both went out.  She lost her boot drive and my operating system crapped out.  Both simple problems but a series of weird circumstances has made it ridiculously hard to fix the simple things.   The computers are 7 years old, so this is to be expected.  The good news is that no information lost, just a delay as I get my house in order, so to speak.

In other news, my Amazon KDP Select obligation just ran out so I am now in the process of publishing to Barnes and Nobles, Create Space (printed books) and Apple.  B&N is as easy as Amazon.  Create Space wasn't so bad, though I have some unresolved questions.  I now understand why other Kindle books charge $15 for a one-off printing.  The less said, the better.

Apple is really tricky.  They prefer you use an aggregator so their "help" isn't very helpful.  If you don't have a macintosh it is non-existent.  Still, it seems there are online converters to the ePub format and there's a service I have heard of called "Macinclouds" where you rent an on-line macintosh.  I think I can use this to publish through Apple, but we'll see.

Christmas Update

Written by

Merry Christmas everyone!  Just thought I would give out a status for those who were interested.  The bad news, no sequel this year.  The good news is that the story is still cooking away.  Maybe by next year I'll have something I can publish.  I am hoping that when I do I can have it proof read a bit more than my initial book was.  Thanks for reading!

Stop In the Name of the Kindle Police!

Written by

I found a new feature in Kindle.  Apparently, readers can report errors in books.  This, in turn, gets fed back to the writer by Amazon Kindle.  A bit embarrassing, but there is no point in pretending my book doesn't have mistakes...  The feedback I got was very specific and allowed me to delete several repeated paragraphs!  Maybe one day I can pretend!

Anyway, version 6 is published.  Once Amazon reviews the changes it will go live.  It also has a new cover.  I previously mentioned that I bought some royalty free photos.  Well, I edited them a bit and I think its pretty decent.  I wanted to mix in a cityscape but after several wrist breaking hours with the photo editor, the changes weren't saved.  A bit disappointing.  I used Cyberlinks PhotoDirector and it doesn't allow saving while removing backgrounds and you can't edit the foregrounds once isolated.  Still what I have is better.

As a side note, the original dragon cover is actually a wooden carved figure I own.  It was a gift from my wife.  Not really a realistic dragon or what I picture my main character to be, however I thought it was decent as concept art.  Its actually a varnished brown color but I thought grey scale hid several flaws better.

New Cover, Perhaps?

Written by

I downloaded some very nice royalty free pictures. I also bought a photo editing program. I am hoping that I can get a nice shiny new cover out of it. I may even put a rear cover on if I figure out how. I have gotten a bit of criticism on the cover and while I didn't think it was that bad... I admit its not that good. That's what you get for doing a book on a budget, I guess.

So the cover I can fix fairly inexpensively. Not sure what to do about the spelling and grammar except go over it and over it until I catch most of the errors. The commercial service I saw to do this for you was about $2000 for a book this size. Ouch! It's going to be a long while before I even make that much.

Anyway. the second book is started. Not far in, but started. I have some ideas on the cover too, however it will be while before it matters.

Once More Into The Breach

One of my readers notified me I had duplicated text in the book... and told me approximately where.  I have now updated the story and it should be on Amazon within 12 hours.  Please welcome revision 5!

Back in the saddle

I have been arranging to sell my house and move.  Things are falling in place and hopefully, I can get back to work on the sequel instead of spending all my time organizing and packing.

Dazed and Confused

Written by

I had been making regular improvements to the books and feeling very proud of it.  Then I downloaded the book from Amazon and realized it still had the original version.  I have unpublished the book entirely and re-published it.  Hopefully, this will work.  It should be on version 4.  I will also try to get in touch with Amazon's service people and figure out if I am using their upload system incorrectly.

Ode to Grammarly!

Written by

Just finished editing and uploading a new revision of the book using the free version of Grammarly.  It caught a lot of errors so I am hopeful that it will be a better reading experience.

Shelfari

Written by

Apparently there is a website called Shelfari that has extra information about a book.  Kinda cool, though I am not convinced anyone actually looks at it.  Anyway, I had fun filling it in.

Updated Book

Written by

Thanks to the reader that reviewed the book I knew it had to be proofread more thoroughly.  January 4th 2014 I uploaded a revised version of the book.  The first 1/3 had been corrected.  I am hoping for more from my proofreader soon.

Published a new book through Amazon's KDP program

Written by

December 21, 2014 I published a new book.  Book one of The Chained Worlds Chronicles, A Prison of Worlds.

We got off to a late start due to lack of players.  We even played a couple virtual board games until Paul called in and pushed us up to 4.  We crossed the drawbridge to the first gate.  There was no cover to be had in the inner courtyard so we debated.  There were plenty of arrow slits but no sign of people.  Loki cast Pace Without Trace which includes a “shroud of darkness” which we hoped would help.  We crossed and came to the front door.  At this point Paul started asking questions.  Did we want to scout around the whole castle perimeter? Is this an intelligence gathering opportunity or a practice fight or what? Ultimately, we decided not to back track and go forward.  The bigger question was how “real” was this encounter.  If we found stuff, do we keep it? If we use stuff, like consumable magic items, do we lose it? Brian was unhelpful and vague, as expected.  We pressed on and went in.

The castle was for the most part empty.  Very much like the abandoned mansions and keeps we’ve cleared out before.  Dusty and decrepit.  We just started wandering about with Baron Q added to the mix.  We heard music coming from the dining room but since we had been there before, we deferred it.  We saw various statues and gargoyles which didn’t animate.  (I had to drop off about here so this is my best reconstruction.)  They found an abandoned chapel to the Morning Lord.  This castle was once home to a noble family, before Stradanya took over the land.  To their surprise, the chapel was still “holy”.  They found a dead adventurer who seemed to have been electrocuted from touching a morning lord statue.  Ezra said it was good so he must have been bad.  He had a magic mace which Baron Q took.  Somewhere in here, they were attacked by some zombies.  They were dispatched without much issue but it made some noise.

Somehow, they went up a level from there (balcony?) and ended up in a hallway.  They triggered a trap and Stradanya appeared.  However, it was just a cheesy hunted house mannequin.  They also found a secret door that led to an elevator going up and down.  They spent an hour on this.  Evidently there were no controls inside it but could control it from the outside.  They sent it up and it made a lot of noise.  As if it hadn’t been used in a long time.  They didn’t want to risk it and didn’t want to change levels until this area was searched.  So, reluctantly, they left it behind.  The next room of interest, after a couple of unanimated skeletons were hacked to bits by Kharn, had the castle’s accountant.  He was very old and chained to his desk.  Surrounded by scrolls and papers.  (I came back at this point.)  Baron Q did his detect magic and we asked him some questions.  He did say that there was no money in his chests.  There was a false treasure room up but that the good stuff was down.  Loki tried to get the location of Stradanya’s bed room or of her minions but he didn’t know.  He was unaware of the elevator but had heard the noise.  Ambrus tried to unlock his chains but the manacle was bolted on.  We left him.

From there we went down into the first main hall via another secret stairway.  (On a side note, because we were using line of sight instead of fog of war, it was very hard to keep track of where we had been and how it all pieced together.)  As we debated whether to go into the dining room, BQ wandered about with his detect magic on.  He passed through the gargoyle room and this time they animated.  We’re not sure what was different.  They attacked but they were dispatched in a couple of rounds.  We were simply too high of level for them.  At this point, it was approaching 1AM so we stopped.  We’ve scouted a tiny portion of the castle and found next to nothing of interest.  I guess the hope is to find something important, like a minion or a glowing red gem, and then map the fastest way there? Anyhow, there’s still a ton of exploring to go.  And where is everybody? Last time we were here, wasn’t it full of servants?

Jon’s game next week.  Without Fantasy Grounds.
